Carlos Manuel Vila Nova, born on July 27, 1959, in Neves, SĂŁo TomĂ© and PrĂncipe, is a politician and telecommunications engineer serving as the country’s president since October 2, 2021. He graduated in telecommunications engineering from the University of Oran, Algeria, in 1985. Before entering politics, Vila Nova worked in SĂŁo Tomé’s tourism industry, eventually managing major hotels like Hotel Miramar and Pousada Boa Vista, and founding a travel agency.His political career began in 2010 as the Minister of Public Works and Natural Resources under Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada. Vila Nova later held the post of Minister of Infrastructure, Natural Resources, and Environment from 2014 to 2018. Representing the Independent Democratic Action (ADI) party, he won the 2021 presidential election with a platform focused on economic development and transparency, and he became the first ADI member to hold the presidency.
